February 2023- Celebrating Black Excellence: Lydia Newman

Lydia Newman was an African American activist and hairdresser from New York City. At the young age of 13, her invention was inspired by the fact she wanted hair brushing to be more sanitary and efficient. At the time brushes were made with soft animal hair and were difficult to clean. Newman's hair brushes changed the game for black folks!

Little is known about Newman's personal life but we know that Lydia Newman’s invention made hair brushes more affordable and easy to manufacture. The synthetic bristles were firmer, lasted longer, and did not break as easily when used on ethnic hair. Lydia Newman helped make way for other black women in the hair care business such as Madam CJ Walker and Marjorie Joyner.
By 1915 Newman was highlighted in multiple newspapers for her suffrage work. She was one of the organizers of an African American branch of the Woman Suffrage Party which fought to give women the legal right to vote. Throughout the first decade of the 20th century Newman campaigned in her neighborhood in New York to raise awareness of voting

Lydia Newman, we remember and appreciate you!
